Dogs have been known to chase birds and other small animals for fun. But when the bird is bigger than the dog is, they might think twice! A Chihuahua puppy and a pigeon have formed an unlikely friendship, and they have inspired many people to help animals in need. Both of the animals have mobility issues, so they bonded as they recovered at The Mia Foundation. Plus, they’re just so cute together!
Lundy is a 2-month-old Chihuahua puppy who can’t use his back legs. Herman is an adult pigeon who is unable to fly, likely due to a brain injury. Despite being two different species, they bonded unlike any other pair at the rescue.
The Start of a Beautiful Friendship
Since Herman can’t fly, Sue Rodgers with The Mia Foundation tries giving him a change in scenery from time to time. Herman has been at the rescue for about a year, and Lundy arrived only a few weeks ago.
Rodgers had a feeling that the two might get along. So, she let Herman share a fuzzy dog bed with Lundy. She thought they’d just relax near each other and take a nap, but it ended up being even better than that!
To Rodgers’ surprise, Herman and Lundy cuddled as if they’d known each other their whole lives. Rodgers kept a close eye on them to make sure they weren’t bothering each other, but it seemed clear that they were destined to be friends. Sure enough, all they wanted to do was snuggle.
Rodgers took some photos of the adorable pair and posted them on the rescue’s Facebook page. She thought it would just be a fun thing for followers to see, but the amount of support they received was insane!
Soon thousands of people commented on how much they love Herman and Lundy. In only a few days, Lundy and Herman’s photos gained 6 million views and 44,000 shares!
How a Puppy and Pigeon Made a Difference
Not only were people in awe at the adorable pictures, but they also helped make a huge difference for rescue. These viral photos raised over $6,000 for the rescue so far, and they encouraged more people to adopt!
“I think the world needs good stories, and when you have two species that basically fall in love, it can only touch hearts,” said Rodgers.
Rodgers and the other staff members bring Lundy and Herman together as much as they can. Of course, the two are always supervised when together. However, they can never get enough of each other’s company!
The rescue continues to share updates on the sweet pup and pigeon. They even created an Instagram page for them! On their Instagram, they announced that Lundy and Herman children’s book is on the way. Hopefully, their story will show the world true friendship has no boundaries.
